What is tranexamic acid?
Tranexamic acid is a synthetic derivative of the amino acid lysine. Doctors have used it for decades as an oral or injected medicine for other purposes. In skincare it is used topically , in serums and creams, as a brightening ingredient.
These are two different things:
- Oral tranexamic acid is a prescription medicine. Only take it if a doctor advises it.
- Topical tranexamic acid is a cosmetic ingredient you apply to the skin.

What does tranexamic acid do to your skin?
In skincare, tranexamic acid is used to help with the look of uneven skin tone :
- It helps brighten the look of dark spots, sun spots and post-blemish marks.
- It helps the complexion look more even over time.
- It is generally well tolerated , including by many people with sensitive skin who find stronger actives irritating.
How it works is simple enough. Visible dark spots come from excess pigment (melanin) building up in the skin. Pigmentation involves several steps, from melanin production to how pigment moves and settles in the skin. Tranexamic acid is thought to act on the signals involved in that process. That is why it is often combined with ingredients that work at other steps.
What about melasma? Melasma is a skin condition that should be assessed by a doctor or dermatologist. A cosmetic cream can help the look of uneven tone as part of your routine, but it is not a treatment for melasma.
Tranexamic acid and niacinamide: which is better?

How to use tranexamic acid
- Cleanse and tone.
- Apply your tranexamic acid serum or cream , morning and/or night. Take an appropriate amount and spread it evenly.
- Moisturise if your product is a serum.
- Always finish with sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) in the morning. UV exposure causes new pigment. Without daily sun protection, no brightening ingredient can keep up.
Can I use tranexamic acid daily? Yes. Topical tranexamic acid is usually suitable for daily use, morning and night.
How long until I see results? Brightening ingredients work gradually. Give any product 8–12 weeks of consistent use with daily sunscreen before judging it. Results vary from person to person.
Can I combine it with retinol or exfoliating acids? Usually, yes. If your skin is sensitive, use retinoids or exfoliants at night and tranexamic acid in the morning. Introduce one new active at a time.
Is tranexamic acid safe for all skin types?
Topical tranexamic acid is generally suitable for all skin types. Patch-test any new product first. Stop use if you notice redness, swelling or itching, and speak to a doctor if it continues.
Topical tranexamic acid is not a substitute for prescription-only lightening treatments such as hydroquinone. Those should only be used under medical supervision.
